Kill the darlings has taken on a whole new meaning for me while I've revised.
To me, it used to mean a clever turn of phrase that a writer couldn't bare to part with because it was just so...
Since I don't have those- hah!- I thought I wouldn't face it
I finally understand that it means anything you love.
This morning I came thisclose (for the millionth time) of giving up on the whole thing. I faced a scene with dozens of phrases and bits of character interaction that were so right, said just the right thing, but needed to go.
I couldn't face it.
I knew it was a better writer than I who can kill their darlings.
But I forced myself to go back and face the cutting floor. I saved them out to the document notes section of Scrivener.
The scene survived the loss. It's okay.
Rinse, repeat x 100.
